Sprayer / Tractor Freemans Metal Art teamed up with Johnsons Chemical of Osage, Iowa to develop a row crop sprayer out of a John Deere 8420T tractor. The 90-foot front mounted boom can be easily removed which allows the tractor to be used for pulling drawn equipment such as a planter. This is the major advantage of this system verses a Highboy or Patriot type sprayer. The front mounted boom also allows the operator easier monitoring of boom height, spray overlap, and watching for mechanical problems. By setting the tracks at 120 inches and removing the fenders, we were able to fit 1200 gallon capacity stainless steel tanks under and behind the cab. This large capacity along with greater horsepower is another advantage of this system. Also, because this machine will be running several thousand acres each year, the tanks and boom will easily outlive the tractor. These components can be installed on a new tractor allowing recovery of much of the initial investment and less replacement cost down the road. This 8420T is also equipped with John Deeres GreenStarTM AutoTrac system to increase productivity for both planting and spraying. Several concepts were developed while designing this project. It started with the wings folding back directly above the tracks with about 600-700 gallon capacity tanks. Another design was to fold the wings outside the tracks allowing for 1500-gallon capacity tanks. This concept design technique allows this system to be easily customized for both tank and boom sizes. |
